Bullion |
Wednesday March 4th:
-Drafted and signed Goalie Michael Bullion (1997) was an honorable mention for February, NAHL Goalie of the Month. Bullion was 3-1 in the month for the Wenatchee Wild, notching a 92.5% save percentage in 5 games. Overall on the season he is 7-9-0-2 with a 2.71 GAA and a 88.8 save%.
-Listed D-man: Jacob Olson (1997) was named the recipient of the Reed Larson Award for Minnesota H.S. Sr. D-man. He's committed to play at Harvard University next year.
Thursday, March 5th:
-In the USHL, listed player Hank Crone (1998-committed to Boston University) had an assist in a 7-2 loss to the USNTDP U-18 team. Everett un-signed prospect and likely #1 pick in the 2016 NHL draft: Auston Matthews had 2 goals for the U.S. team. Crone has totaled 10 pts in 43 games with Omaha this season.
-List forward: Luke Voltin (1995) scored for the Vernon Vipers in Games 1 and 2 of their series against the Merritt Centennials and they now face the Penticton Vees in the BCHL Interior Division Final, starting. Voltin has 26 pts in 44 games this season for Vernon. Oddly enough, former Winterhawk Jarrod Schamerhorn is Vernon's Goalie.
Friday, March 6th:
-Listed D-man: Jack Dougherty (1996) has played a lot as a Freshman with Wisconsin this season. While he's reportedly had a good year, the team hasn't (4-22-4) and could lose it's coach as a result. What this means for Dougherty's future? I don't know but the Nashville Predators 2nd round pick, would sure look good in a Winterhawks sweater.
Hobson |
Saturday, March 7th:
-Listed player: Forward Ryan Poehling (1998) won the Minnesota Class 2A state title with Lakeville North, beating Duluth-East 4-1. Ryan, along with his 2 older, twin brothers Jack and Nick, were a potent top line this season and also in this game. Ryan scored the game's first goal and his borothers combined for 6 points. All three have commited to play for St. Cloud State, so it will be difficult for the Hawks to convince the H.S. Sophomore to give up playing with his brothers again.
-Drafted and signed D-man Jake Hobson (1999) and the SMAAAHL's Prince Albert Mintos were swept by the Notre Dame Argos 3-0 in their best of 3 set. Hobson notched an assist in game 1 of that series. The series loss means there will be a new Telus Cup champ.
Sunday, March 8th:
-Signed, listed player Austin Gray (1997) and the Cariboo Cougars won their BCMML Quarter Final series over the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds and list player Brett Clayton (1998) 2 games to 1. Clayton finished the season with 34 points and 137 penalty minutes. Gray was among the regular season league leaders in points with 64 in 25 games. Gray's Cougars next take on the South Island Royals in a best of 3 series this weekend (3/13-3/15).
Reedy |
-Another Winterhawks list player who's college team is playing poorly is D-man Teemu Kivihalme (1996). He plays for Colorado College and while he's had a solid season, totaling 10 pts in 33 GP, his team is 6-24-3 and cold have their season end in the 1st round of the NCHC playoffs vs. UND. Kivihalme is another Nashville drafted player (5th round, 140th overall-2013).
-The USNTDP Evaluation camp roster was announced on Wednesday and both Bantam Draft picks: Brannon McManus (C/RW-1999) and Scott Reedy (C-1999) were named. They will try and make the U.S. National U-17 team at the camp: March 20-24th in Ann Arbor.
Thursday, March 12th:
-2013, 8th round bantam pick: Forward Garrett Wait (1998), was named 3rd team all state in Minnesota after a solid season with Edina. He's committed to play for the University of Minnesota.
